The luxury and color of gold

What can be the fineness and color of gold?

A question that often arises from customers is what kind of luxury and color can the gold be, how do they influence each other? You've all seen numbers or other symbols stamped into jewelry. Such a symbol is a national state quality control mark, which guarantees that the purity of the precious metal is not less than that indicated on the quality mark in Arabic numerals. The Convention is the only global agreement harmonizing the control and labeling of precious metal products, thereby eliminating barriers to free trade in precious metal products. As an example, the number 750 stamped on a gold ring indicates that the product is made of a metal alloy with a pure gold content not less than 75% of 100%. The remainder of the alloy may be a combination of various other metals. In Lithuania, this service is provided by a state institution - the Lithuanian Chamber of Probation. We recommend that you visit their website to find out how metal and gemstone products are marked. All jewelry sold in the Republic of Lithuania must be tested and certified. The metal is marked with the appropriate fineness, and the gemstones are attached with a certificate issued with the type of gemstones and their parameters. When purchasing precious metal jewelry with or without gemstones, make sure that the item has all the necessary markings. Very often, customers want to make a new piece of jewelry from their existing, unused gold. This is quite a common practice, especially among newlyweds who want to use the gold rings of their beloved parents or grandparents for their own rings. A jeweler can fulfill this request, but make sure that the gold items you have are of good quality.

Gold is marked with 375, 585, 750, 916 and 999 fineness. Abroad, people often use karat marking of gold, so these grades used in Lithuania correspond to 9, 14, 18, 22 and 24 karat grades. The higher the fineness of the gold, the more gold is in the alloy, and of course such jewelry will cost more. 999 fine gold is mostly used for coins or investment gold. For jewelers, pure gold is a bit too soft, so you'll usually see items marked 585 or 750. The natural color of gold is quite bright yellow, so higher quality products will often be yellow or yellowish. Other popular choices of gold color are white, green, pink, red. In order to obtain a color other than yellow, it is necessary to use metals of other colors in the alloy, thus creating the desired shade of gold. A 750 fine (18K) alloy will contain 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals (18:6), a 585 fine alloy will contain 14 parts gold and 10 parts other metals (14:10). Always keep in mind that the price of jewelry is not determined by the color of the gold, but by the quality of the product. It is worth noting that white gold jewelry is covered with rhodium. Rhodium is one of the very rare and expensive precious metals. Its most important properties, which are extremely important for jewelers, are that it does not oxidize or rust. White gold products coated with rhodium remain white and shiny for a very long time. To renew white gold jewelry, you can recoat it with rhodium, so even a piece that is several decades old can look brand new again.

What kind of product to choose? The main factor by which buyers choose a piece of jewelry is the price. 585 luxury jewelry is the most popular because of its affordable price. But remember, they are cheaper not only to buy, but also to sell or give away. Products marked with a lower quality of gold are sold cheaper, their monetary value is lower. In terms of appearance (color), the 585 fineness will not be as bright yellow as the 750 fineness, so lovers of bright yellow gold still choose the higher fineness for their aesthetic preference. Red and white products marked with 585 and 750 fineness are not very different to the naked eye. As we mentioned, gold, by itself, is a rather soft metal, so 585 fine products are a bit stronger due to the larger amount of harder metals they contain. For everyday wear, such jewelry is a more popular choice. For example, in Germany, jewelery products bearing the 375 mark of luxury are very popular. They are extremely durable, long lasting and cheap. An economical option for those who want to dress up in beautiful items, but who do not want to significantly thin their wallet. In Lithuania, products marked with this quality are not very common, however, people here like jewelry of purer alloys, because they retain more monetary value.

Often, gold of various colors and finenesses can be used in one article. For example, a white gold (585 fine) ring decorated with a yellow gold (750 fine) crown and a diamond at the top. In this case, the Lithuanian Chamber of Probation marks the product with 585 gold fineness.
